In 2024, Ørsted is in the process of constructing a record-breaking 6.7 GW of offshore wind capacity across multiple global projects, marking the highest level in the company’s history, as reported in a recent newsletter from the prominent offshore wind developer.
A significant contributor to this year’s construction endeavors is the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm in the UK, where Ørsted’s final investment decision in December 2023 propelled the project into active construction. Hornsea Three stands out with 231 wind turbines and an impressive generation capacity of 2,852 MW. Expected to be finalized by the end of 2027, Hornsea Three claims the title of the world’s largest offshore wind farm under construction, according to Ørsted.
In Germany, Ørsted is advancing the construction of Borkum Riffgrund 3, set to be the largest offshore wind farm in the country upon its operational launch in 2025, boasting an installed capacity of 913 MW. The adjacent Gode Wind 3, with a capacity of 253 MW, is also in the construction phase, having completed the installation of all monopiles.
Taiwan is witnessing Ørsted’s progress with the completion of all 111 wind turbines at the Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farms, totaling 900 MW. Commissioning work is currently underway, with the next phases, Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms, in the active construction phase.
Highlighting another milestone, Ørsted’s South Fork Wind project in the US is in the commissioning phase, having installed the final wind turbine this month. Notably, South Fork Wind is the first offshore wind farm supplying electricity to the New York grid.
