15 MW Vestas Offshore Wind Turbine Set for Installation Adjacent to Danish Port

Vestas Secures Order for 15 MW Offshore Wind Turbine to Grace the Waterfront in Denmark’s Port of Thyborøn

Thyborøn-Harboøre Vindmøllelaug I/S af 2002 has placed a definitive order with Vestas for a V236-15.0 MW wind turbine set to be strategically installed on the shores of the Port of Thyborøn in northwestern Denmark.

The order encompasses a single V236-15.0 MW wind turbine, covering supply, delivery, and commissioning of the unit. Additionally, a 20-year AOM4000 service agreement has been included, along with an agreement for Vestas to conduct test and verification activities on the turbine.

Situated in Thyborøn within Lemvig Municipality in northern Denmark, the Nissum Bredning site anticipates wind turbine delivery to commence in the first quarter of 2024, with commissioning slated for completion in the second quarter of 2024.

Jens Jørgen Birch, spokesperson at Thyborøn-Harboøre Vindmøllelaug I/S af 2002, expressed satisfaction, stating, “We are very pleased to install the new V236-15.0 MW turbine at a site in Thyborøn that offers great wind conditions for optimal energy production. Nearly 2,800 local shareholders have financed the turbine, and we look forward to showcasing it to locals and tourists as we expect it to become an attraction.”

The V236-15.0 MW prototype was initially installed at the Østerild National test center for large wind turbines in Western Jutland, Denmark, in December 2022. Achieving its nominal power rating of 15 MW three months later, the unit set a world record in August 2023 for the most power output by a single wind turbine in 24 hours, generating 363 megawatt-hours during that period. Vestas secured a type certificate for the 15 MW wind turbine at the close of the previous year.

Vestas has already garnered orders for the V236-15.0 MW wind turbine for offshore projects in Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands, with the first offshore installations slated to commence from 2025.

Nils de Baar, President of Vestas Northern and Central Europe, commended the effective collaboration with Thyborøn-Harboøre Vindmøllelaug, highlighting the turbine’s role in the final verification campaign before initiating serial production and offshore installations featuring the V236-15.0 MW turbine. He also applauded the rapid 264-day approval process by the municipality and the overwhelmingly positive local support, presenting a noteworthy international example of how swift permitting and community engagement can bolster the green transition.
